Santa Monica City Council Candidate Statement

I’m running for Santa Monica City Council because machine politics and city employees have more input into public policy than residents. Other candidates accept contributions and endorsements from special interests who have undue influence on public policy, and expect extra consideration in return.

I will be an independent voice responsible ONLY to city residents.   To accomplish this the City can provide FREE WiFi linked to moderated public forums on the City website, creating the first virtual town hall, or electronic village.

The Internet is a powerful tool to hold public officials accountable, expose corruption, incompetence, and conflict of interest.  It would empower residents to monitor and participate in city government, audit the budget online, and discuss solutions to the problems of traffic, crime and homelessness, etc.

Other candidates use the internet primarily to raise money and reach out to their base.   I am the only candidate who would use the electronic interface for participatory, grass roots democracy.

In our increasingly transparent society, information is power.  I will not allow city staff, public agencies, business, media, car dealers, commerce, tourism, realtors, or developers to continue to determine policy and dominate city government.
